Fun Summer Reading Programs

Let's keep our little one's minds busy this summer with some of these free, incentive based, summer reading programs. Summer is full of fun and swimming (LOTS of swimming), but let us not forget reading.This is a fun list of Summer Reading Programs which will entice your child(ren) to continue reading over the summer. Some of these are strictly online based and some are hands on. Choose from our fun list and get busy reading because summer has just begun!

Copperfield's Summer Reading Adventures

Every kid is a detective at Copperfield's this summer. Kid's can sign up for a detective license complete with picture (dark glasses and various hats are warn to conceal these detective's identities). They even get to chose their own alias. The license is hung on the wall of the library and each time a reader finishes a book their license is updated. They also will get a case file to keep track of all the book reads which will help them work towards receiving their Detective Badge in August. A huge celebration will take place at the end of the summer to celebrate all of the detectives hard work! Sign- up at any Copperfield's location.

Sonoma County Library Summer Reading Club

Read to win a variety of prizes and a free book at the end of the summer. The theme this year is "Every Hero Has a Story" and indeed they do! When kids sign up for this Reading Club they receive a journal to log their summer reads and with each book they read they earn a sticker. Milestone prizes are incentives for them to feel as though they are achieving something the whole summer long. Sign-up at any Sonoma County Library to participate.

Sonoma County Library Teen Read

When you register your teen (7th-12th grade) up at any Sonoma County Library you receive a Teen Read Game Card. Your teen reads books and completes Library Activities to earn stamps on their Game Cards. There are five different prizes available including treats, gift cards, and a free book. Earn raffle ticket for book reviews and workshop attendance. Raffle tickets go into a drawing for a Kindle. The workshops include cartooning calligraphy, henna art, duct tape crafts, origami and much more. For more information about the workshops, please visit sonomalibrary.org.

Summer Book-It Challenge

Sponsored by Pizza Hut, this Book-It Challenge is an online interactive reading program that motivates children in grades K-6th to read throughout the summertime. Online, kids can share how many minutes per day they have read, download fun activities, and chat. The goal this year is collectively reading 1 million minutes by August 15th. Any kids who reads 5 books by August 15th has a chance to win awesome Book-It prizes and treats. Visit www.bookitprogram.com for more information.

Chuck E. Cheese Reading Awards

This is a year-round program that many parents do not know about. Kids can earn 10 free tokens for reading every day for 2 weeeks straight. At www.chuckecheese.com/activites/rewards-calendars you can download a Reading Rewards Calendar. There are additional chances to win more free tokens such as Good Behavior,  Daily Chores, Good Eater, Potty Training, and Table Manners. 

Book Adventure

This is another year-round reading program. This one is sponsored by Sylvan Learning Center. This program was designed to motivate young reader grades K-8th. In this program kids read books and come back and quiz themselves on what they just read to earn prizes for their achievement. For more information visit www.bookadventure.com. 

PBS Summer Reading Adventures

This is a 10 weeks of a do-it-yourself summer reading camp. There are online activities with a different theme for each week. Visit www.pbs.org/parents/summer for more details and to get started.
